Scorching heat grips Chennai as mercury soars beyond 37 degrees

February 22, 2017 7:38 PM |

Summers in ChennaiHot weather conditions have intensified across South India. After Bangalore, Chennai was the another city to record day maximum temperature several notches above normal.

On Wednesday, Meenambakkam Observatory recorded maximum temperatures of 37.3°C that was 5.5 degrees above the normal average.

According to Skymet Weather, such high temperatures make the weather unbearable. Being a coastal city, the feel affect will be much more as compared to the places in the plains. Close proximity to the sea keep the levels of humidity very high over these regions. These increased humidity levels combined with high temperatures lead to unbearably hot weather.

Meanwhile, Nungambakkam Observatory had some relief as the day maximum settled at 32.1°C.

According to Skymet Weather, the warm inland winds blowing from the adjoining states of Telangana and Maharashtra are reaching up to the city. These places are already witnessing scorching weather with day maximum settling appreciably above normal by several degrees.

Moreover, no relief is seen at least for the next 24 hours as mercury will continue to soar. Thereafter, we can expect change in wind pattern and winds will then start blowing from the sea. Thus, we can expect some relief from scorching weather.

Also, Chennai does not record much rains during the month of February and its monthly average rainfall stands at mere 2.2 mm.
