Odisha is the first state in India to witness extreme summer conditions with the mercury rising above 40°C this year.
Parts of Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal have been witnessing heatwave conditions in pockets right from the last week of March into April.
On Wednesday morning, the Odisha government extended the school holidays till April 26 as temperatures are still around 45°C in most parts of the state.
No relief is in the offing and the decision to reopen the schools will be taken only after looking at the weather conditions. Earlier the state government had announced closure of government and private schools till April 20.
On Tuesday, Sundergarh was the hottest city in the country with maximum at 46°C. Here’s a look at the temperatures in rest of the places of Odisha:
Normally coastal stations, by virtue of their proximity to water, witness modest temperatures even in the peak of summer. However, at present even the coastal stations are witnessing very hot weather conditions. In fact, Balasore is experiencing severe heatwave with day temperature 7°C above normal. Another coastal area, Chandabali is also quite hot at 41.8°C. Such high temperature with high humidity is a deadly combination, leading to terrible conditions over these coastal areas.
