Scattered rains to continue over North India

August 8, 2016 1:35 PM | Skymet Weather Team

It is the third month of Monsoon season and yet most of the states of North India have not received sufficient rainfall till now. And most of the states in the region are still on negative side. Himachal Pradesh is rain deficient by 19%, Chandigarh is rain deficient by 41% and Haryana is at 13% on the negative side of normal.

On the other hand, Uttarakhand has received 9% normal rainfall, Delhi has received 13% normal rains; Jammu & Kashmir and West Uttar Pradesh has received normal rains of 5% and 12%.

Now axis of Monsoon trough is still passing through Rajasthan and North Madhya Pradesh. However, a feeble Western Disturbance is passing through hills of West Himalayas. We expect scattered light to moderate rain to continue over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for next 24 hours.

Thereafter the intensity will increase and moderate to heavy rains may occur over these areas. However Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh may receive light rain at some places for next 24 hours. But we expect the rain intensity to increase over Punjab and foothills of West Uttar Pradesh thereafter.

By August 10 and 11 the rain intensity will further increase and Delhi NCR may receive few good spells at that time. But rain activity over entire North India will not be very vigorous. So we can say scattered light to moderate rain will occur for next 2-3 days. Rain deficiency which is persisting over the region will continue to persist.
