Scattered Rains and Hailstorms Hit North India

March 30, 2024 11:56 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Parts of North India experienced rain and hailstorms over the past 24 hours due to a western disturbance over the Western Himalayas and an induced cyclonic circulation over Northwest Rajasthan. These weather systems brought showers and thunderstorms with hail to Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and Northwest Rajasthan. Lighter rain fell across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha. This activity is typical for the pre-monsoon season, where hailstorms are common in the northwest and eastern regions.

The good news is that the rain and snowfall over the Western Himalayas are expected to taper off within 24 hours. However, residents in the northern parts of Punjab and Haryana should still be prepared for possible rain and hailstorms today, March 30th. While these storms can be damaging to crops, they also bring welcome relief from the hot weather.

Central and Eastern India can expect lighter scattered rain over the next day, with minimal impact on crops in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and East Uttar Pradesh.
It's important to note that pre-monsoon activity typically intensifies in April and May, and these stronger storms can cause widespread damage to maturing crops.
