Chennai rains displayed a phenomenal performance during the month of June. So much so that the city received double the amount of rains as compared to its monthly normal rainfall. Usually, Chennai does not receive rain during the Southwest Monsoon season.

While the capital city of Tamil Nadu received scattered rain during the last few days of June, the month of July began on a dry note. In fact, Chennai received good rains only around July 6 and 7. Since then, the city has remained dry for quite some time.

However, rain gods decided to bestow some kindness on the rain shadow area and good rains have made a comeback. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Chennai has received a good 36 mm of rainfall. These rains can be attributed to the development of cumulonimbus clouds over the area.

With this, Chennai has recorded 59.6 mm of rainfall in July so far against its monthly average rains of 100.3 mm. This means, that in less than three weeks, the state capital has already received about 60 percent of rains.

Now, on and off rainfall activity is expected to continue over Chennai for another week. These rains will be attributed to the development of a feeble trough along the East Coast right from Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu.

A cyclonic circulation is also expected to come up in the Bay of Bengal after 48-72 hours. This, a few moderate showers may also occur over the city between June 20 and 23. By this time, Chennai is likely to reach its monthly rains.

The monthly rainfall figures increase over Chennai during the months of October and November in the Northeast Monsoon season. Chennai does not receive much rain during the Southwest Monsoon season as it lies in the rain shadow area.
