Scanty rains to continue over Maharashtra, control attack of pink bollworm

July 25, 2018 1:13 PM |

Mumbai rains may cross monthly mean before June ends

Rains over Maharashtra reduced considerably and in the last two days, most parts of the state witnessed a significant reduction in the rain activity. However, the South Konkan division continued to receive light to moderate rains on the last day along with over parts of Vidarbha and South Madhya Maharashtra.

The rains remained scattered over North Madhya Maharashtra and North Konkan. On the other hand, Marathwada and interior parts of Madhya Maharashtra remained almost dry.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Mahabaleshwar recorded 37 mm of rains, Vengurla 6 mm, Kolhapur 5 mm, Akola 5 mm, Amravati 3 mm, Dahanu 3 mm, Satara 3 mm, Nashik 2 mm, and Mumbai and Bramhapuri recorded 1 mm of rains each.

The reason for this steep reduction in rains over almost the entire state can be associated with the absence of any significant weather system over the region.

As per Skymet Weather, the cyclonic circulation that was prevailing over Gujarat has also moved away which resulted in this reduction.

As of now also, we expect the rains to reduce further over the entire state. However, the Konkan region would keep on witnessing light spells only. Vidarbha may get one or two moderate spells. On the other hand, the weather of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada would be almost dry.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

Farmers are suggested to complete all intercultural operations like weeding, fertilizer application, gap filling etc. Farmers are also recommended to control the attack of pink bollworm in irrigated Cotton and judicious use of insecticides is advisable in Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha on a non-rainy day.

Farmers are also advised in Pruning in the grape orchard, where the dense canopy is observed. Weed management should be done in groundnut, cotton, Pigeon pea, maize, and black gram.
