Scanty rain in South India last week

Thenortheast monsoon rainremained scanty in South India during the week from 5th to 11th of December. Three out of five regions that usually benefit from the northeast monsoon rains from mid-October to mid-December have received very little rain while two other regions witnessed almost no rain last week.

Rain was scanty by 88 to 99 per cent during the week in coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.Coastal Andhra Pradeshgenerally receives about 10.7 mm of rain but it got only 0.1 mm of rain during last week.

Similarly Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry region has recorded just 3.8 mm of rain compared to the average rainfall of 31.2 mm during the week. Kerala also remained scanty as it recorded just 0.3 mm of rain compared to the average of 14. 4 mm thus falling short by 98 per cent.

Two other regions, Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka did not record any rain. Both the regions receive an average rain of 10.1 mm and 5 mm respectively.

Northeast monsoon rain has remained excessive in just one out of five regions from 1st of October till 11th of December. Coastal Andhra Pradesh recorded 44 per cent more rain than the average of 315 mm. It has received 453.9 mm of rain during this period. Three other regions namely Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry have witnessed a deficit monsoon during the period.

The northeast monsoon has been normal in Kerala which received 426.9 mm of rain against the average of 465.6 mm in the period from 1st October till 11th of December.
