Performance of Monsoon in June shows a good omen

Rain in IndiaJune is the onset month for the Monsoon season, which generally arrives by June 1. Most parts of the country also get covered bySouthwest Monsoonby the end of the month. However, this year Monsoon covered the entire country including West Rajasthan by June 26.

Monsoon 2015, after ushering in over Kerala a little behind schedule on June 5, made a sluggish progress in the initial days. The reason was Cyclone Ashobaa. However, Monsoon showers gained strength thereafter.

This month, we have witnessed various shades of Monsoon across the country – sometimes slowing down and then again gaining strength. Overall the month received very good showers and recorded 128% rain till June 26. All the four geographical regions ended up with surplus rain. Central India received 55% of rain, followed by Peninsular India with 30% of rain and Northwest India received 27% of rain. East and Northeast India received around 3% of rainfall.

Till date the country has received 159.2 mm of rainfall (estimated by area weightage), which is very close to the monthly average of 163 mm. By looking at the last 10 years data, we can say that the overall performance of Monsoon has been good when its performance in June has been satisfactory.  The table below will validate this statement.

Monsoon Performance

It’s a good thing that we are not carrying any rain deficiency forward. As July is likely to receive some rain deficiency, this surplus rain will cover it up. In the last ten years, we have seen that when Monsoon starts on a good note, it ends on a good note as well. But, we cannot rule out a poor Monsoon even if June receives good rainfall.
