Satisfactory performance of Monsoon 2015 in Kolkata

Active Monsoon conditions have been witnessed in Kolkata during last 24 hours. The city recorded 72.8 mm of rainfall in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday.

This spell of rain could be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast. The weather system is expected to strengthen into a low pressure area within next 24 hours. Therefore, the city will receive more showers in the coming days.

The city seems to be inching towards the monthly average rainfall as well. It has received 338.4 mm of rain against the monthly average of 352.4 mm. In fact, the overall performance of Southwest Monsoon in Kolkata has been quite satisfactory.

Monsoon 2015 in Kolkata

The onset of Monsoon over Kolkata was a little delayed and the city witnessed under par activity in the month of June. Kolkata had received 215 mm of rainfall against the monthly average of 283 mm.

Monsoon showers gained strength with the commencement of July. Kolkata had surpassed the monthly average rainfall for the month of July (400 mm) in the first 10 days itself. Click here to read the full story.

Withdrawal of Monsoon takes place from Kolkata only in the last week of September. Therefore, the Monsoon rains will continue in the ‘mishty city’ throughout September and even till the first week of October. Kolkata generally receives around 313 mm of rainfall in September and 158 mm in October.
