March 29, 2018 1:37 PM |

Madhya Maharashtra 1

The state of Maharashtra is witnessing quite high temperatures and are settling between 40-41 degrees Celsius. The worst affected regions have been Vidarbha, Marathwada, and parts of Madhya Maharashtra.

Isolated pockets of South Madhya Maharashtra including Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur are also recording above normal maximums between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius.

However, situations have drastically improved in the Konkan division. In fact, Konkan remains the only area in the entire state of Maharashtra wherein the temperatures are settling in the mid and lower 30s.

On March 25 and 26, parts of Konkan division, including the capital city Mumbai experienced heatwave conditions wherein the temperatures soared at 41ºC, highest since 2011. The temperatures that were 6-8 degrees Celsius above normal then, have now subsided and are settling near normal, making the weather of the region comfortable.

On Thursday, the Konkan division that includes cities like Mumbai recorded the maximum temperatures at 32.7ºC, Ratnagiri 32ºC, Mahabaleshwar 32.8 ºC, and Alibag 34ºC.

On the other hand, the maximum temperatures of Akola settled at 41.5 ºC, Nagpur 40.9 ºC, and Ahmednagar witnessed 40.2 ºC.

As of now also, not many changes in the temperature profile are expected in the coming days. As per the predictions by Skymet Weather, the temperatures may increase marginally over North Madhya Maharashtra in places like Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, and Malegaon.

Meanwhile, isolated light rain or thundershowers are likely over parts of both Vidarbha and Marathwada around April 5 or 6.

At this juncture, let us look at the impact of this hot weather condition on the agriculture of Maharashtra:

The increased temperature in the state of Maharashtra may cause water deficits and excess soil water depletion in the vegetable crops and fruit orchards of Oranges and Mango.

Farmers are advised to irrigate the fruit and vegetable crops. Farmers should also take adequate measures by spraying effective pesticide at early morning against pest infestation that is very much likely in crops like Sugarcane and Maize

The farmers of North Madhya Maharashtra are advised to take measures against plant wilting.
