It seems like fatal disease swine flu, which has claimed around 812 lives so far, is intended to stay in India for few more days. Unusual weather conditions prevailing across the country have aggravated the situation and with the rain days expected ahead, there is a possibility of steep rise in the numbers.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, consecutive Western Disturbances will be giving week-long rainy spell across Northwest India, commencing during the next 24 hours which is expected to go on till March 03.

Significant weather activity has raised serious concerns over H1N1 influenza, as weather has played major role in intensifying the flu this season. As per the figures released by State Health Ministry on February 22, 812 people have been reported to be dead, while 13,688 people have been tested positive with the H1N1 virus across the country, with Rajasthan and Gujarat being the worst-hit states.

Role of weather in swine flu

Weather plays an important factor in causing the virus to sustain and spread. The virus comfortably survives in the winter season and during spring since the temperature does not shoot up. Low temperatures along with humidity are a plus for the H1N1 virus.

Back to back weather systems this season have kept the humidity levels high and influenced the wind pattern across the plains of northwest India and adjoining areas, resulting in conducive environment for swine flu to sustain for a longer period.

Moreover, a spell of rain between February 28 and March 02 will cover larger parts of the country including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, which might lead to further spreading of the swine flu virus.

We can hope for some respite, only once hot and dry days set in with mercury rising.
