The cyclonic storm Pabuk is hanging in the Andaman Sea and its adjoining region since the last three to four days. Earlier this same system was named Usman when it majorly effected the Philippines region. In fact, this system has travelled and affected many countries such as Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Burma and now India.
In wake of the above weather system, many places in these countries recorded heavy rainfall activity. In fact, Sawai in Thailand recorded over 200 mm of rain in two days.
Due to its rapid weakening, this system weakened into deep-depression before making its landfall over the Bay Islands such as Port Blair. However, it entered southern parts of Port Blair around 6:30 am with strong winds of about 50 to 60 kmph gusting up to 70 kmph.
Due to this system, Sunday saw heavy to very heavy rains were recorded over Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Hut Bay recorded 101 mm of rain, followed by Port Blair 75 mm, Mayabunder 66 mm, Car Nicobar 46 mm, Long Island 32 mm and Nancowry 20 mm.
After crossing Port Blair region, this system has now moved further northwards and weakened into Depression. At present, this depression is centered at 12.6˚N and 92˚E, about 130 km Northwest of Port Blair.
Further it is expected to re-curve and move northeastwards towards Myanmar region any time soon now. It will also weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area. Thus, resulting in decrease of wind speed to about 30 to 35 kmph.
However, in wake of the above system, we expect moderate rains to continue over parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands for another 24 to 36 hours.
