Relief in sight from hot weather for West Coast

February 26, 2017 12:34 PM | Skymet Weather Team

West Coast of India has been witnessing very hot and sultry weather conditions since past many days. The month of February has brought extreme variations in terms of maximum temperatures. Many areas observed maximums in late 30 degrees in the recent days.

These weather conditions can be credited to warm and humid easterly winds blowing across the region. In wake of these winds, the day temperatures continued to settle above normal over Konkan and Goa, coastal areas of Karnataka and Kerala. Mumbai also witnessed above normal maximums that resulted in hot and uneasy days.

Heatwave conditions were witnessed across the region, which is just intolerable for the people to withstand. Heatwave conditions are declared when the day temperature of any coastal city reach at least 38°C or less and is above normal by 5 to 6°C.

In a span of 24 hours, Mumbai recorded a maximum of 39°C, followed by Vengurla 38°C, Ratnagiri 38°C and Alibag 37°C. Also Punalur witnessed a maximum temperature of 38°C and Karwar 34°C.

According to Skymet Weather, a trough is likely along the West Coast. In addition to this weather system, the wind pattern is also expected to change from warm easterlies to cool westerlies.

Due to this, the maximum temperatures are likely to register significant drop along the entire coast including Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala in next 24 to 72 hours.

Thus, we can say that some relief can be expected from the existing heatwave conditions along the West Coast.
