Cold Wave has been prevailing across the Northern states in the last few days. Moreover, some pockets even experienced severity of Cold Wave where minimum temperatures went down the normal mark by more than 5°C. Many places in the recent past have even touched the zero-degree mark. Talking about today morning, Churu in Rajasthan went sub-zero at -1.1°C whereas Delhi NCR saw both day and night temperatures sinking 3 to 4 degree Celsius below the normal. The reason for this can be attributed to the cold and icy winds blowing (all the way from Himalayas) over the Plains.
However, these cold winds abate when the reversal in wind pattern takes place. But when does the reversal actually take place? One of the reasons for wind reversal is the Himalayan region being approached by some fresh weather system (such as a Western Disturbance), which cuts down the way for cold winds.
Very soon i.e. starting tomorrow onward residents will have a reason to rejoice as these cold conditions will bid farewell to the region for at least some time as meteorologists at Skymet have forecast the formation of a fresh Western Disturbance over Hills by January 30.
This system will bring in rains over Northern cities such as Jammu, Kathua, Hoshiarpur. At other places clouding will take place. As National capital Delhi is on the fringe of the effect, it might not receive rains.
Northern Plains such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh and Rajasthan will experience night temperatures going up by 4 to 5 degree Celsius. Some places may even see temperatures reaching double digits. Good thing- such conditions are here to stay for a while at least till the first week of February until the gap between successive Weather systems become large enough for any Cold Wave conditions to affect yet again.
