Incessant rains over Kolkata have disturbed both human and nature.
The weather system started off as a cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal which later induced a low-pressure area. This system gradually intensified into a well-marked low pressure area. Further this weather system was seen as a depression over northwest Bay of Bengal, off Odisha and West Bengal coast.
The depression intensified into a deep depression during last 24 hours, while moving in a northwest direction. It has caused widespread heavy rains over the city with strong gusty winds.
But as the system has moved towards north-northwest, the weather has improved over West Bengal region. Light rain has occurred in last 6 hrs. In fact, we expect light rains to continue over entire Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata for next 24 hours as well.
As on August 17, the cumulative rainfall deficiency of the region was 10 percent. Yesterday's rains actually improved the cumulative rainfall figure for the city to quite a great extent. Again, a low pressure area is likely to form over North Bay within next 48 hours, further causing heavy rains.
The intensity of rain will decrease over Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal. However, temperatures are expected to rise over Kolkata with humid conditions prevailing over the capital city.
During last 24 hours, 79 mm of rain was witnessed over Alipore observatory in Kolkata.
