Relief from flooding in Kerala post 48 hours, heavy rains to cease thereafter

August 10, 2019 9:30 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Flood fury is still continuing in many parts of Kerala. Particularly, the northern parts of Kozhikode and Kannur have received more than 100 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours as well.  However, rain activities have gone down over Kochi and the southern districts which were also witnessing some heavy rains.

Now, the Monsoon surge is weakening over Kerala. Therefore, we expect a gradual decrease in rain activities. Today, we expect moderate to heavy rains with one or two very heavy spells over Kerala. Tomorrow, the rain intensity will reduce further followed by the day after when the state will witness light to moderate rains only.

So, there will be gradual decrease in rain activities over Kerala due to the decrease in Monsoon Surge. Moreover, the Cyclonic Circulation which was persisting over Southeast Arabian sea off Kerala coast up to 7.5 kms from mean sea level has also started to weaken. Therefore, the rain activities will go down and there will be a gradual relief from ongoing flood like situation over the state. However, as the rain activities will continue in moderate to heavy intensity today Therefore receding of floodwater will take time and situation will continue to remain grim for another 48 hours. Significant relief is only expected after 48 hours as the rain activities will go down further.

So, we do not expect any significant Monsoon surge in the coming days. Now, we do not expect any major rainfall activity over the state for at least the next one week.
