Many parts of northeastern states like lower Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have been recording heavy to very heavy spells in the past few days. Also, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura recorded moderate to heavy showers during the same time frame.

So much so that these rains have wreaked havoc across the areas. In Assam, around 11 lakh people have been affected and 19 districts are hit by the deluge. Four people have died due to floods in Assam in the past 24 hours.
In Arunachal Pradesh, the relentless Monsoon showers have created chaos with floods and road blockades. Rivers in Tripura are also swarming, leading to water logging situation.
In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Cherrapunji recorded a whopping 210 mm of rainfall, followed by Shillong 61 mm, Itanagar 50 mm, Goalpara 36 mm, Kailashahar 19 mm, Guwahati 16 mm, Pasighat 15 mm, Agartala 1 1 mm, Dhubi 10 mm, Silchar 8 mm, Kohima 7 mm and Anni 6 mm.

The reason for these showers can be attributed to the axis of Monsoon trough which is running close to the foothills of Himalayas.
Weathermen at Skymet Weather expect rains to decrease over Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, which may bring some relief to the current flood situation. Meanwhile, moderate to heavy Monsoon showers are possible over Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the next 24 to 48 hours.
