Record rains, landslides wreak havoc in Uttarakhand, weather to clear up now

As had been reiterated by Skymet Weather, the state of Uttarakhand has recorded torrential rainfall activity. In fact, Pantnagar has witnessed record rains of 404 mm of rains in the last 24 hours, which is an all time record in itself for the month of October. In fact, the city has an all time monthly record of 301.2 mm which was witnessed in 1985. The 24-hour rain record stands at 138.8 mm which was seen in 2009. Mukteshwar Kumaon has also witnessed very heavy rains of 341 mm during the same time frame, and Tehri at 70 mm. The upper regions of the state have also witnessed first snowfall of the season.

These rains in the last couple of days over the entire state of Uttarakhand has wreaked havoc over the region, resulting in flooding conditions across many areas as well as landslides in some parts. Seventeen people have died so far and there are chances that more people are trapped under the debris.

Several homes have been damaged, water bodies are overflowing, a few under construction bridges have been washed away. The city of Nainital has been cut off from the state due to a series of landslides in parts. Army has jumped in to help in relief and rescue mission.

Now, as per weathermen, relief is in sight with the rains seeing a reduction to quite an extent today. In fact, only light showers are expected and that too in some parts of the state of Uttarakhand. Weather will start clearing up which will make things easier for rescue operations as well.
