Northeast India is the only pocket of the country that is witnessing pre-Monsoon rains and thundershowers. Meanwhile, rest of the country is under the tight grip of hot weather.

In the last 24 hours, heavy pre-Monsoon rains savored most states of Northeast India including Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur. So much so, that Silchar in Assam and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya recorded a three-digit rainfall figure.

Within a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Silchar witnessed a record-breaking 242 mm of rains. With this, the city has already surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 152.6 mm and in mere 24 hours. So far, Silchar has observed 364 mm of rains.

In addition to this, it is also the highest monthly rainfall recorded in the last 7 years.

On the other hand, Cherrapunji had also observed hefty showers of 164.8 mm for the second consecutive day.

Till now, Cherrapunji has recorded 595.7 mm of rains against its monthly mean of 228 mm. Hence with these rains, even Cherrapunji has also surpassed its monthly mean with a huge difference.

Moreover, other states of the region have also observed light to moderate showers. As per Skymet Weather, the monthly rains for Assam are close to normal.

As reiterated by Skymet Weather, these heavy rains were a result of a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and adjoining northern parts of West Bengal. Moreover, an east–west trough is also seen extending from Bihar to Nagaland across Bangladesh and Assam.

In addition to this, the moist southwesterly winds that are reaching the region from the Bay of Bengal is also fueling up the rain activities.
