The state of Tamil Nadu has a varied terrain wherein its entire length shares the coastline, along with which there are mountain ranges and the plains as well. By the virtue of this, there are variety of weather conditions observed over the region, particularly during the Pre-Monsoon season.
Kanyakumari lies on the southern tip of the state which opens into the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. In fact, Kanyakumari lies at the meeting point of three water bodies. Thus, the region comes under the influence of the oscillation of the ITCZ (Inter Tropical Conversion Zone). Due to this, feature, the region sees slightly higher rainfall.
Such has been the case during the last couple of days wherein Kanyakumari has recorded over 100 mm of rains. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Kanyakumari recorded 57 mm of rainfall, which happens to be the second highest in a decade. The monthly rainfall for Kanyakumari stands at 62 mm, which has been surpassed in the first twelve days of April itself.

In the coming days also, Kanyakumari along with the interior parts as well as the southern half of the coast are expected to continue witnessing good rains.
As we move from the southern parts of Tamil Nadu to the northern parts, rain intensity during the month of April varies. While the coastal regions record the lowest rains followed by the interiors with the highest rainfall being over the hilly regions of Tamil Nadu.
Taking a look at the monthly rainfall for various parts of Tamil Nadu for the month of April, Chennai observes 14 mm of rain, Nagapattinam 33 mm, Madurai 60 mm, Salem and Tondi 56 mm each, Kodaikanal 128 mm, Coonoor 110 mm.
The reason why interiors of Tamil Nadu see more rains as compared to the coast during the Pre-Monsoon season is the presence of the semi-permanent trough which runs across the interior regions. Due to higher elevation, hills see even more rains.
As far as the temperatures during April are concerned, the maximum temperatures in the hills ranges in the 20s, coast sees them in the mid-30s, while the maximum temperature reaches up to 40 degrees Celsius.
