Record breaking rain in Jammu and Kashmir

Heavy rain in Jammu The weather inJammuand Kashmir has been creating havoc in the state for the last two days. Heavy to very heavy rain, particularly in the last 24 hours has broken several records. For instance Batote, from 8.30 am on Sunday recorded 124.4 mm of rain, breaking the ten-year-old record of 115.9 mm. The all-time high 24 hours rainfall in the city is 138.1 mm, observed on March 6, 1979. Batote, so far in this month has recorded 372.6 mm of rain against the monthly average of 289.9 mm. Similarly,Katrain the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Sunday experienced a whopping 139.2 mm of rain, which is the second highest in a decade. The highest amount of rainfall recorded was 261.9 mm, observed on March 13, 2007. This incidentally is also the all-time highest rainfall figure. The total rainfall that the city has received so far in this month 393.8 mm, which is far more than the monthly average of 155.7 mm.

Another place to observe some record breaking rain is Jammu, where in the last 24 hours 98.1 mm of rain has been recorded. This is the second highest rainfall experienced in last ten years. The highest is 145.2 mm, which is also the all-time highest rainfall. Just like the other two places Jammu has also recorded 293.7 mm of rain which is almost four times the monthly average of 74.9 mm.

The state capitalSrinagarhas also been lashed by some very heavy rain this month. According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the city has recorded 237 mm of rain during the month so far, against the monthly average of 237.5 mm.

Other places in the state to have observed good amounts of rain in the last 24 hours are Kukernag, where 84.7 mm of rain was recorded. Banihal recorded 72.2 mm of rain, Quazigund 70.7 mm, Bhaderwa 65.8 mm, Pahalgam 58.2 mm, Gulmarg 40.1 mm and Kupwara 26.5 mm of rain.

Meanwhile, meteorologists at Skymet say that there could be a brief improvement in the weather condition for next 48 hours as the rainfall is likely to reduce in intensity. However, by March 2 we again expect some good amounts of rain in the state.
