The hilly states of North India witnessed a mild and snow free December. So much so that the regions were witnessing above normal minimums as well as maximums. However, weather conditions witnessed a drastic change during the month of January.

Both rain and snow gods decided to bestow a little too much of kindness over the residents of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The region has been witnessing on and off rain and snowfall.

At present, an active Western Disturbance is over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas. Due to this, heavy to very heavy rain and snow has been recorded over several areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Qazi Gund recorded a whopping 94 mm of rainfall which happens to be the highest in a decade. Not only this, 66 mm of rainfall along with snow was observed over Gulmarg which is also the highest in the last eight years.

Other areas also witnessed good rains and snow including Srinagar where 20 mm rainfall was observed. Jammu also recorded heavy rains of 48 mm during this period.

During the next 24 hours, more rain and snow are likely to affect the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. The possibility of avalanches cannot be ruled out which is why residents are advised to stay cautious and alert at all times.
