Active to vigorous Southwest Monsoon has given heavy to very heavy rains in South Konkan and Goa during the last 24 hours. While the northern districts of Konkan including Mumbai received isolated light rains only.
Ratnagiri has recorded extremely heavy rains to the tune of 280 mm in a span of just 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday, thereby becoming the rainiest place in the country during this span. The highest ever for the month (304.4 mm) was recorded on July 28 in 1900.
Meanwhile, good rains were witnessed over South Madhya Maharashtra, wherein Satara received 20 mm of rains whereas Pune, Nashik, and Ahmednagar observed light rains. Some isolated showers were observed in Solapur and Wardha as well.
Several other places like Harnai has recorded 79 mm of rainfall, followed by Alibag 45 mm, Vengurla 29 mm, Mahabaleshwar 15 mm, Kolhapur 5 mm, Colaba (Mumbai) 4 mm and Nashik 2 mm, in the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Monday.
According to Skymet Weather, the rain belt will now shift towards North Konkan and Goa and the region including Mumbai may observe a few good spells of rain by today evening. The rainfall activities will gradually increase and moderate to heavy rains will start lashing the city and its suburbs July 25 onward.
Meanwhile, the weather of Vidarbha and Marathwada will remain dry with isolated light rains for the next 24 hours. Monsoon rains will increase over these divisions by July 25. And on July 27 and 28, we expect a significant increase.
On the other hand, the region of Madhya Maharashtra will continue to see scattered rains throughout the week.
As on July 22, Maharashtra is rain deficient by only 8%. The subdivisions of Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra are rain surplus by 11% and 9% respectively. While Vidarbha and Marathwada are rain deficient by 30% and 38% respectively. The upcoming rains may help in pulling down the rainfall deficiency of these two meteorological divisions to some extent.
