Sluggish rainfall activities have been witnessed over the state of Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata in the last few weeks. Meanwhile, heavy rains had lashed the southern and western districts of West Bengal swelling several rivers, but the chances of floods had been ruled out.
In the span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Bankura recorded 254 mm of rainfall, followed by Digha at 104 mm, Jamshedpur 78.5 mm, Burdwan 72.6 mm, Bokaro 64.8 mm, Kolkata 60.5 mm, Ranchi 57.4 mm, Asansol 53.5 mm, Daltonganj 16.4 mm, Krishnanagar 14 mm, Midnapore 30 mm, Diamond Harbour 26.5 mm, Jalpaiguri 12.4 mm, Sriniketan 11.2 mm, Coochbehar 8.6 mm, Baharampur 8 mm, Deogarh 4.3 mm and Malda 2.4 mm.
But now it is likely that the Monsoon activity will intensify and moderate to heavy rains and thundershowers may continue to show up over this state and as well as over Jharkhand. These weather conditions can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is prevailing over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal. Due to this, moderate to heavy Monsoon showers along with few isolated very heavy spells of rains and thundershower may occur over both the states during the next 24 to 48 hours.

Meanwhile, places such as Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Bankura and Digha may continue to receive moderate to heavy Monsoon showers for the next 24 hours. As these good showers may continue over these areas, the warm and humid weather is likely to take a backseat over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand for the next few days.
The weather conditions will remain pleasant and comfortable during the evening and night time over these two states. As on July 22, the state wise distribution of rainfall statistics shows that Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand are both rain deficient states by 5% and 19% respectively. However, if these good Monsoon rains and thundershowers continue to occur then it might help these two states to reach its rain surplus mark within few weeks.
