Rajkot, Surat, Ahmedabad, Bhuj to wait for another 3-4 days for Monsoon rains

Monsoon has already marked its onset over Coastal Gujarat, with Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) passing through Valsad. However thereafter, apart from giving few good spells, region has remained mainly dry with one or two episodes of light rains on occasional days.

In wake of this, day maximums have increased are settling in the range of mid-30s and high 30s, leading to warmer days. And, with the Monsoon surge reaching the parts of Gujarat, levels of humidity have also increased. This has further contributed in discomfort.

Initial spell of good rains was due to the Monsoon surge and persistent off shore trough along the West Coast from South Gujarat to Kerala. In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation was also marked over Northwest Arabian Sea, off North Maharashtra and Gujarat coast which had further enhanced the rain activity.

Now, the trough has become less marked and at present, can be seen running from Coastal Karnataka and Kerala only, while the cyclonic circulation has fizzled out.

With this, cities like Rajkot, Bhuj, Surat, Porbandar, Veraval, Amreli and Ahmedabad are witnessing dry weather conditions, with only few recording very light and patchy in nature. In fact, during the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Veraval recorded mere 3 mm of rain, Surat 4 mm and Gandhinagar 2 mm.

Further, weathermen do not predict any significant weather activity over Gujarat for the next 3-4 days as well. The state will only have to manage with light showers only till then.

However, Monsoon is likely to pick up pace once again by June 25. According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over South Gujarat and adjoining Arabian Sea, which will strengthen the Monsoon surge again. Thus, we expect several cities would start receiving good showers from June 26 or 27. One or two heavy spells may also record during this time.
