It seems like rain gods are a little too kind to the residents of Gujarat during the past few days. Southwest Monsoon did make an onset over Gujarat and since then, rainy days have become a common affair in the state.

The last 24 hours were no different and moderate to heavy rains were recorded over many parts of the country. In a span of 21 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Porbandar recorded a whopping 111 mm of rainfall. Not only this, during the same time span, Rajkot witnessed 71 mm of rainfall.

Heavy showers in Rajkot were not only a problem for the residents but Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also bore the brunt. Many areas of Rajkot were waterlogged including PM Modi’s event venue, Race Course ground where Modi was to distribute assistance kits to over 18,000 disabled persons.

Water pumps were used at the Race Course ground to remove the water. A few inches of water had affected hoardings, banners and other equipment. Water was also pumped out by the assistance of the fire department of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC).

These weather conditions can be attributed to the presence of a cyclonic circulation off the Saurashtra and Kutch region. Due to this, moisture incursion has increased over the state as moist winds from the Arabian Sea have resulted in cloud development over the region which in turn resulted in rains.

Other parts of the state also received good rains including Ahmedabad 12 mm, Dwarka 29 mm, Naliya 41 mm, Okha 28 mm, and Veraval 18 mm.

As per weathermen at Skymet, these moderate to heavy rains will continue over isolated pockets for at least the next 24 hours. Interior parts of the state will receive light rains.
