Rainy weekend in Delhi, winter chill to grip soon

January 6, 2017 12:00 PM |

Winters in DelhiIt has been mild winters for North India till now and so does for Delhi-NCR. Normally, the national capital witnesses lowest temperatures of the season between the last week of December and January 10. However, this season, we have entered the last leg of first week of January but winter chill has still not arrived.

Now, the much-awaited wait for the famous Delhi winters seems to be coming to an end. Two successive Western Disturbances are affecting Jammu and Kashmir. These systems have also induced a cyclonic circulation over Central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan, which will gradually move eastwards.

In wake of this, scattered rains have already commenced over northern plains of Punjab. Now, we expect rain activities will start over Delhi-NCR by late night of January 6 or early morning of January 7.

Rain activity will continue for the span of 24 hours, leading to drop in day maximums on Saturday.

Thereafter rains will take a back seat as the all the systems move away from the region. This will pave way for the cold northwesterly winds blowing straight from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh where heavy snowfall has been going on.

As a result, both day and night temperatures will start falling significantly January 9 onwards. We can expect mercury to be lowest between January 10 and 12 and night temperatures may settle below 5°C.

According to Skymet Weather, Delhi will have to reel under severe winter chill throughout the next week. It can also be marked as the coldest period of this winter.
