The state of Rajasthan received bountiful monsoon bursts in the opening week of August 2024. East Rajasthan has been a better beneficiary than West Rajasthan. The state as such has a surplus of 32% rainfall in the monsoon season so far. Between 01st June and 31st July 2024, West Rajasthan had a cumulative rainfall of -6% and East Rajasthan, a shade better with +1%. Courtesy of heavy monsoon rains in all parts of the state between the 01st and 05th August, albeit in a staggered manner, both the sub-divisions have become surplus with large margins. West Rajasthan is in excess with 38% rainfall and East Rajasthan, is slightly lower at 28% rainfall. More monsoon showers are likely over this week. A heavy and strong spell is coming up, more so, for the eastern half of the state.
A depression formed earlier over the eastern parts of the country had travelled right up to East Rajasthan on the last weekend. This system dragged monsoon troughs also to the south, cutting across the northern half of the state. Under the combined influence of these two systems, the state witnessed one of the heaviest monsoon spells of this season. Depression has now weakened and its remnant circulation also will fade away soon. However, the east-west oriented elongated monsoon trough will continue to remain in close proximity. Some in-situ circulations will also get embedded in the feature to accentuate the monsoon activity.
The state will have active monsoon conditions, more intensely commencing on 08th Aug and continuing till the start of next week. Most parts of the state, except small pockets in the extreme west, will have moderate rain and thundershowers between 08th and 10th August. The intensity and spread will increase around fag end of the week, over East and Northeast Rajasthan. Scattered heavy rain and thundershowers are likely between the 11th and 13th Aug 2024. Places at risk with very heavy rainfall will include the capital city Jaipur, Ajmer, Dausa, Tonk, Bhilwara, Bundi, Sikar, Nagaur, Pali and Jodhpur. Light to moderate showers are expected over the rest parts also, during this period. Surplus rainfall figures for the season will mount further for the state, during the first half of August 2024.
