Mumbai is expected to have heavy to very heavy rains this week commencing July 12 and lasting till July 21. There stands a possibility of three digit rainfall in 24 hours on few days. Capital city Mumbai and its suburbs, both in the north and south, are expected to have heavy downpour. Intense weather activity can extend up to Dahanu in the north and Ratnagiri towards south.
Mumbai received above normal rainfall in the month of June. However month of July, so far, remained uneventful, and recorded only 200.6 mm rainfall in the first 12days. The heaviest downpour of 73 mm was measured on July 8 and insignificant amount on other days. Month of July is the rainiest of all with normal figure of 840.7 mm. The last three consecutive years clocked above 1000 mm rainfall in this month topped by July 2020 with whopping 1502 mm, nearly double the normal.
So far, between June 1 and July 13, the city of dreams has recorded 1164.2 mm of rains which is more than the normal by almost 300 mm.
There are two factors responsible for the upcoming activity. A low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal will move inland and travel across the complete stretch of Maharashtra. As such, the formation of any weather system intensify the monsoon surge along the West Coast and continues till the system goes past Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Also, there is another system as well marked cyclonic circulation over Northeast Arabian Sea and Gujarat region. The combined influence of these 2 systems will result an extended wet spell for the financial capital of India.
Inclement weather conditions may result water logging and inundation of certain areas. Communication, connectivity and commuting may also be impacted. Rail, road and air traffic may get restricted occasionally. The extended wet spell will take the monthly rainfall to a reasonable figure. The intense weather activity will take a break and ease out after one week.
