Monsoon activity generally remained on the back foot for the entire Delhi/NCR during the weekend. Light and fleeting showers for short periods were witnessed in some areas. The airport observatory at Palam and Gautam Budhnagar recorded about 1 mm of rainfall and the rest places measured just trace or no rainfall in the past 24 hours. The absence of showers led to a rise in mercury levels. The base observatory at Safdarjung recorded 35°-36°C, which was above normal by 2-3°C. The twist in the weather conditions is likely, once again.
The depression over Vidarbha and the neighbourhood moved west-northwest and weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area. The system is now lying over the tri-junction of Southwest Madhya Pradesh, Southeast Rajasthan and North Madhya Maharashtra. The seasonal trough, otherwise lying south of its normal position, above the friction level, will have tendency to move the western end northward.
The monsoon trough is the main trigger for rainfall activity over the capital city. This oscillating feature resulted in decent showers last week. Now, under the combined influence of western disturbance and low-pressure area, the monsoon trough will find proximity to Delhi/NCR. Also, the cyclonic circulation will shift slightly northward over West Madhya Pradesh and East Rajasthan over the next 3-4 days. Under these conditions, Delhi will observe scattered showers, lasting nearly for the entire week.
Moderate spells of rainfall are expected between 02nd and 05th September. Monsoon showers will reduce in intensity and spread during the subsequent three days. The upcoming weekend will be fairly comfortable with a cloudy sky, moderate breeze and patchy showers. Rains are going to reduce significantly, next week.
