As predicted by Skymet Weather, light to moderate rain and thundershower activities accompanied with strong winds were witnessed in many parts of Northeast India in the last 24 hours.
During the pre-Monsoon season i.e. from March to May, the average seasonal rainfall for Pan India stands at 132 mm. But the interesting fact is that about 50% of the contribution comes from Northeast India itself. In Northeast India, the main contribution is derived from Arunachal Pradesh followed by Assam & Meghalaya and finally Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Even though in March, all the northeastern were rain deficient but April began on a rainy note and on April 1, the region recorded 35.4 mm of rain against its normal of 5.1 mm. In fact, for the next 3 days, similar conditions prevailed and each day the actual rainfall exceed its average normal largely.
Today also, we expect widespread rainfall activities to occur in parts of Northeast India. But on April 5 and 6, rains would reduce marginally, and only isolated light rains will be witnessed in few places of South Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
April 7 onwards, once again widespread rains accompanied with strong winds, lightning and hailstorm activity will commence over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. During this time, we can even expect few heavy spells also.
The reason for these rains can be attributed to the semi-permanent cyclonic circulation over Assam and adjoining Meghalaya region. Along with this, the presence of an anti-cyclone also plays a vital role in bringing precipitation over the northeastern states as they would increase the moisture level over the region.
