For the last 2-3 days, on and off showers going on over Mumbai and suburbs. Isolated pockets of suburbs have been receiving intense rain and thundershower activities. These showers were not continuous and there were gaps in between, so we have not witnessed severe waterlogging and flash floods which are common for Mumbai during monsoon season.
If we talk about rainfall in different parts of Mumbai and suburbs, then during the last 24 hours, Santacruz recorded 41.4 mm of rain, Colaba 21.6 mm of rain, Chembur 37.6 mm of rain, Powai 25.8 mm of rain, Borivali 40.2 mm of rain, Mulund 78.6 mm of rain, Thane 52 mm of rain.
The cyclonic circulation over South Gujarat is enhancing the moisture feed over Gujarat and Maharashtra coast including Mumbai. A trough is also extending from the northeast Arabian sea to north Madhya Maharashtra across Mumbai.
We expect moderate rains with one or two heavy spells to occur over Mumbai and suburbs during today and tomorrow. From August 16, rain activities to subside over Mumbai and suburbs. But, on August 17 and 18, rains may intensify once again over Mumbai and suburbs. We do not expect extremely heavy and continuous downpour over Mumbai and suburbs. Therefore, the chances of severe waterlogging and flash floods are less. But the waterlogging cannot be ruled out for low lying areas.
