Rainy Week Ahead for East and Northeast India

May 4, 2024 10:05 AM |

While East and Northeast India have been rain deficient by 28% between March 1 and May 3, some relief is finally on the horizon. A much-needed pre-monsoon rain spell is expected to begin from May 6th, bringing much-needed showers to the region.

While some states like Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Jharkhand, and Bihar fall under the "normal rain" category, others like Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal are facing rain deficiency. Meghalaya has been hit particularly hard, categorized as "large rain deficient."

Currently, scattered rain and thunderstorms are offering some respite in Northeast India, but these are insufficient to meet the daily average rainfall. However, a change in weather patterns is expected to bring a significant increase in precipitation.

Here's a breakdown of the upcoming rain activity:

Northeast India (May 4th-9th): Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms with lightning strikes and strong winds (40-50 kmph) are expected. There's a chance of heavy to very heavy rain on May 5th and 6th, with Sikkim potentially experiencing isolated heavy rainfall on May 5th.

East India (Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, East Uttar Pradesh, Odisha) (May 6th-10th): A cyclonic circulation over Bihar, combined with troughs extending towards Manipur, West Bengal, and Odisha, will bring enhanced rain and thunderstorms. Gangetic West Bengal may witness isolated heavy rainfall on May 7th and 8th, while scattered light to moderate showers with thunderstorms and lightning are likely across East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand between May 6th and 10th.

This pre-monsoon rain spell is crucial for the region, offering much-needed moisture to the parched lands. However, it's important to be aware of the associated risks. Eastern India, particularly Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, are prone to lightning strikes during the pre-monsoon season. These can be extremely dangerous and claim many lives every year.

While the upcoming rain may not completely erase the rain deficit, it will certainly improve the situation and bring some relief to the region. It's important to stay updated on weather forecasts and take precautions to stay safe during thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
