The weather in Bihar Jharkhand and most parts of West Bengal has been dry for the last many days. In fact, parts of Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal observed heat wave conditions last week. Isolated light rain occurred over southern districts of West Bengal during the last 24 hours. We expect more rains for the next 24 to 48 hours over parts of West Bengal. These rains are in the wake of cyclone Mocha.

Rain activities are expected to commence over east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and parts of Odisha from May 15 or 16. The reason for these rains will be a trough which will be extending from northwest Uttar Pradesh to West Bengal.

Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over East Uttar Pradesh. The last rain spell over East India was during the last week of April which continued until the first week of May. This upcoming rainfall will be much more intense. There are chances of intense rain and thunderstorm associated with lightning strikes. Thunder and lightning are common weather factors in East India during the pre-monsoon season.

The violent thunderstorm and thundershowers are known as Kal-Baisakhi in local parlance. These weather activities are expected to continue for at least the next 7 to 8 days. Temperatures will subside and there will be relief from hot weather conditions.
