March, April and May are the peak months for tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. It is during this time that tourists from across the country flock the popular destinations of Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg to escape the scorching summer heat and enjoy the pleasant weather and the scenic beauty of the state.
So far in May, Jammu and Kashmir has been enjoying pleasant weather conditions. The day temperature in the state has been settling marginally above normal. The night temperature has also been hovering at comfortable levels. For example, Srinagar saw the maximum settle at 26.6°C on Tuesday, which is 4 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled 2 degrees above normal at 12.5°C on Wednesday morning.
But according to meteorologists at Skymet there are three spells of rain expected during May. The first spell of rain is likely to start affecting the region from May 10 and continue till May 13. During this period the state of Jammu and Kashmir will observe moderate rain with isolated heavy in pockets.
The second spell is expected around May 17. The three-day spell will also give good amounts of rain in the state. However, it will be weaker compared to the first spell on May 10. The third and the last spell is expected towards the end of the month.
The average rainfall for Srinagar during May is 71 mm, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg observe 129 mm and 150 mm of monthly rainfall, respectively. In the first week of May there hasn’t been any weather activity in the state, therefore rainfall amount has been nil in these places. But with three spells of rain expected during May, these popular tourist destinations of Jammu and Kashmir may surpass the monthly average rainfall.
