Rainy weak ahead for South India, rain and thundershowers expected over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh

After the North-Eastern states, south peninsula is the most rain deficient region in this Pre-Monsoon season.

Between March 1 and April 5th, there are only three meteorological regions in the South Peninsula, which have received access rainfall, which are coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and North interior Karnataka.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh is rain surplus by 30%, Telangana by 20% and North interior Karnataka by 28%. Tamil Nadu is large rain deficient by 82%.

During the last 24 hours, many parts of Kerala have received light to moderate rain with one or two heavy spells of rain and thunder shower. Scattered light to moderate rains also occurred over interior parts of Tamil Nadu as well as Karnataka. The weather of coastal Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh remained dry.

A trough is persisting from south Tamil Nadu to north Madhya Maharashtra. In-fact, this trough is a semi-permanent feature during pre-monsoon season which is usually responsible for pre-monsoon activities over South India.

We expect rain and thundershowers to continue over many parts of Kerala and scattered over interior Karnataka and interior Tamil Nadu. Isolated rains are also possible over coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai.

On April 7 and 8, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh may also receive rain thunderstorm activities. But the intensity and spread of these rains will be comparatively less. There may be marginal short-term relief over Andhra Pradesh from ongoing hot weather conditions. Therefore, we can say that pre-monsoon activity will now pick up pace over the South Peninsula in the coming days.
