After being rattled by the Cyclone Vardah last December, New Year 2017 started with good rainfall over the Islands of Andaman & Nicobar.
At present a trough of low is persisting over South Andaman Sea. This trough has already given light to moderate rainfall at many paces over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and 1-2 places have received very heavy rainfall also.
Nancowry received 64 mm of rainfall, Car Nicobar received 45 mm, and Hut Bay got 33 mm rainfall in last 24 hours. Many other places of the island received light rainfall. We expect this trough of low to intensify in a low pressure system over South Andaman Sea by January 5.
Intensity of rain is also expected to increase over Andaman and Nicobar Islands around January 6 to 8. We expect extremely heavy rains over these islands which may lead to flooding in several areas.
Further intensification of the weather system into a well-marked low pressure system cannot be ruled out. Therefore caution must be observed while travelling to these areas around January 5-10.
People travelling to Andaman and Nicobar Islands to enjoy the first few days of New Year are most likely to be disappointed with the downpour over the region.
