In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday, both Minambakkam and Nungambakkam observatories of Chennai recorded rain to the tune of 1 mm each. In the similar time frame, Vellore witnessed moderate rain to the tune of 32.8 mm, Tiruttani 21 mm, Salem 12.4 mm and Kodaikanal 10.8 mm. In fact, Madurai, Dharmapuri and Tondi also witnessed light rainy spells.

These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal and a trough which is moving northwards off the Tamil Nadu coast. Moreover, another trough which is extending from Maldives in the Arabian Sea northwards off Karnataka and Kerala coast is responsible for the rainfall activity.

Due to this rainfall activity, a marginal change has occurred in the temperature profile. The sky conditions have turned cloudy.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, Chennai rains will take a back seat. However, the southern parts of the state are likely to witness light to moderate rainy spells. In fact, the intensity might increase at one or two places also.

These rains are expected to last for another 24 to 48 hours over Tamil Nadu in varied intensity. However, the city of Chennai will now become dry. Gradually, the rains will start evacuating the coastal regions and thereafter the remaining parts of the state will also witness dry weather conditions.
