Rainy Spell For Delhi, Temperatures Unlikely To Rise

April 18, 2024 12:55 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The Capital city, Delhi is likely to see light rain today and a spell of rain and thundershowers tomorrow. Earlier, a trace of rainfall was recorded by both the observatories, Safdarjung and Palam, in the past 24 hours. Sporadic rainfall activity and strong surface winds have mitigated the heat factor, so far. The Record observatory has measured a maximum of about 35°C for the last 3 days. The mercury level may rise by a notch today, before dropping once again due to upcoming weather activity.

Going by past records, Delhi records the temperature of 40°C or more on a few occasions, in the month of April. Since 2009, the month of April has breached the 40°C mark repeatedly, except in 2012 and 2023. The capital city saw the temperature soaring beyond 43°C in 2009, 2010, 2017 and 2022. Possibly, the city is on track to have a repeat of last year, this time too. The Capital town has shied away crossing 40°C so far. Delhi crossed 39°C on four successive days, between the 10th and 13th of April, with the highest of 39.4°C, on 12th April. The temperature is likely to get arrested at or below 37°C for the next 5-6 days.

A western disturbance is marked over North Pakistan and Jammu & Kashmir. It is likely to stay for about 48 hours, leaving only a remnant effect for the subsequent 24 hours. Also, there is a cyclonic circulation over border areas of Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan region. This feature will move closer tomorrow, over parts of Punjab and Haryana. An east -west trough is running in close proximity to Delhi. Local heat and the combined influence of western disturbance and cyclonic circulation will trigger pre-monsoon rain and thundershowers over the next 2 days, more so on Friday.

A mild spell of light rain and drizzle is likely today and  moderate activity with lightning and thunder expected tomorrow. The weather activity will happen in the late evening and night hours, on both days. Clearance on the 20th will be followed by strong surface winds. Under the influence of these conditions, mercury is unlikely to rise, abruptly. At best, the maximum temperature may get restricted to about 36°C. The normal temperature for Delhi reaches about 38°C during the fag end of the month.
