Rainy spell approaching South Tamil Nadu

February 15, 2016 11:50 AM |

Rainy spell approaching South Tamil NaduFor the past few weeks, weather conditions have remained dry in Tamil Nadu. After the horrific Tamil Nadu floods, no significant weather system has caused good rains over the state. Chennai has also remained dry during this period.

However, a rainy spell is approaching Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours.

The low-pressure area, which has developed over central parts of Bay of Bengal will now move in a westerly direction resulting in rain over the state.

Though the system will be towards the south of Sri Lanka and significant rainfall activity will occur over that area, southern parts of Tamil Nadu may also observe scattered light rain on February 16.

Both the spread and intensity of rain will increase over South and Interior Tamil Nadu on February 16 and 17. Places including Tirunelveli, Pamban, and Tuticorin are likely to receive rain on February 16.

Light to moderate rain is also expected over Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Nagapattinam, and Thanjavur on February 17 and 18. While good showers are expected over many places, the intensity of rain during this spell will not be heavy to hefty.

Chennai, which was battered by massive floods during the months of November and December, is likely to be spared this time. No rainfall activity is expected over the capital city because the weather system is moving south of Tamil Nadu. Thus, most districts in the north will remain dry.
