After a dry northeast Monsoon and an even deterred southwest Monsoon, rains are finally showing up over the southern tip of India, includingTamil Nadu. But the capital city of the state,Chennaiis still rainless and chances of the city missing out on this rain activity are very much likely.
At present a cyclonic circulation is seen over Southwest Bay of Bengal is persisting up to 3.1kms above sea level. A trough from this system is extending southern of tip of Tamil Nadu and thanks to this, many parts of the state are witnessing some rainfall activity.
In the last 24 hours stations that recorded rainfall are, Adirampattinam 77 mm of rainfall,Coonoor14 mm, Karaikal near Pondicherry observed rainfall of 80 mm. Nagapattinam andMadurairecorded rainfall of 32 mm and 48 mm respectively.
The system is expected to more in a West-Northwest direction gradually. In the last 24 hours due to the trough of low widespread moderate to heavy rainfall has occurred over the state especially over the coastal regions. Even neighbouring state of Kerala witnessed some showers.
The rainfall is likely to reduce in next 24 hours; however the coastal areas will continue to get light rainfall. After this brief break in rainy spell, the weather activity will again pick up pace and will gradually cover most parts of Tamil Nadu andKerala. It may further extend toward northwest direction and cover most parts of south interiorKarnatakaand coastal Karnataka.
Around January 26, which happens to be the Republic Day of India, most parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and South Interior Karnataka will observe rain activity.
