Rainy New Year ahead for Punjab and Haryana, hailstorm also expected

December 29, 2019 1:07 PM |

rain in Punjab

The neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana have been reeling under cold wave conditions for the last few days. Both day and night temperatures have significantly decreased, leading to intense cold weather.

These freezing weather conditions can be attributed to cold north-westerlies, blowing from the snow-clad mountains of the Himalayas. The winds are likely to continue for another 24 hours, intensifying cold wave conditions in association with moderate to dense fog in many parts of Punjab and Haryana.

However, as time progresses, say after 24 to 48 hours, the temperatures will start increasing owing to the approaching Western Disturbance over the Western Himalayas. The surface wind pattern is likely to change from northwesterly to easterly, leading to a rise in the temperatures. Initially, these winds will affect East and South Haryana and later extend up to North Punjab.

The system is most likely to bring rain and thundershowers for different parts of Punjab and Haryana on January 1 and 2. Hailstorm activities in one or two parts are also expected on New Year’s Day.

The changing wind pattern would bring some relief from ongoing cold wave conditions as night temperatures will increase and might settle near normal on December 31 and January 1.

Just like minimums, maximums too would rise, say after next 24 hours, leading to an improvement in the cold day conditions. Moderate to dense fog may appear during early morning hours, however, light sunshine may take over towards forenoon.
