Cyclone Mandous ushered quite a few rainy days for the capital cities of Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. With the remnant of cyclone in the Arabian Sea moving far from the coastline, weather conditions will improve soon over all the 3 metros, nearly simultaneously. Incidentally, together they await next spell commencing next week, of course with varying intensity.
Cyclone Mandous which crossed coast north of Puducherry in the wee hours on 10th Dec casted heavy rains over the capital city Chennai between 08th and 10th December. Otherwise, 5 day rains from 08th to 12th Dec accounted for 244mm rainfall, exceeding the monthly normal of 182.4mm. Light rains will continue over the city for 2 more days, on 13th and 14th Dec and a break thereafter.
Bengaluru, not known for sporadic rains in December, was lashed with moderate to heavy showers on 09th and 10th Dec. City amassed 75mm of rainfall, between 08th and 12th Dec, far in excess of its monthly average of 15.4mm. Light rains, patchy in nature are expected for today and tomorrow and stop later.
Hyderabad, the least rainiest of the 3 cities, mostly enjoys dry weather conditions having 0.3 rainy day during December. The city gathered few showers, specially on Sunday- 11th Dec. The city totalled 8mm of rainfall over the last 3 days. Light sprinkle in some areas may be observed on 13th and 14th Dec and seize afterwards.
A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over Southeast Bay of Bengal in the next 24hr. The weather system will reach Southwest BoB, off Sri Lanka coast on 17th Dec. Under the combined influence of an easterly wave and the low pressure area, next round of rains will commence from 18th Dec, to start with Chennai and Bengaluru and go beyond 22nd Dec. Chennai may be lashed with yet another hefty spell, while Bengaluru observes mostly moderate or light rains. Hyderabad remains at a safe distance and is likely to witness only light rains on 21st and 22nd Dec. South Peninsula rains may extend till the weekend.
