Rainy days ahead for South Tamil Nadu, Kerala; dry weather in Chennai

February 23, 2018 9:20 AM | Skymet Weather Team

The South Indian region, particularly Kerala and Tamil Nadu observe the least amount of weather activity during this time period. Rains remain far away, and residents observe increasing temperatures during this time.

Any rains that do occur during this time is when feeble cyclonic circulations embedded in the ITCZ extend northwards giving rains over the region. Even then only the extreme southern parts of these states record rains while the northern areas remain dry.

Talking about Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the state of Tamil Nadu is presently witnessing its maximum between 30 and 32 degrees while minimums are settling between 19 and 20 degrees.

Meanwhile, the state of Kerala is observing higher maximums between 32 and 34 degrees while minimums are settling between 22 and 24 degrees. Thus, the western coast of the Southern Peninsula is warmer as compared to the eastern coast.

Currently, a cyclonic circulation persists in the extreme South Bay of Bengal region closer to the equator. This system has also caused some rains over the Bay Islands during the last 48 hours. A day before the southern parts of the islands including Nancowry recorded 34 mm of rainfall.

Now, this system is expected to shift eastwards and largely affect the weather over Sri Lanka. However, the southern parts of Tamil Nadu as well as Kerala may witness some rains. Meanwhile, as Chennai lies in the northern part of Tamil Nadu, the weather will remain dry over the city.

The system will approach the coast on February 24 and give rains over South Interior and South Coastal Tamil Nadu on February 25. These rainfall activities are expected to continue for the next few days and may even spill into the first few days of March.
