Capital city of Tamil Nadu is likely to come in for light to moderate showers for the next one week. Most of the weather activity will take place during late hours of the day and night. Monsoon showers will be intermittent with sufficient break in between. Rain and drizzle accompanied with partly cloudy sky may not suffice to provide any major relief from the warm and sultry conditions during the day. Mild breeze and the fleeting showers could rase the comfort level marginally during the night.
A cyclonic circulation off the coast of North Tamil Nadu in the lower levels and a north-south trough along the coast are the main features to cause the weather activity. Monsoon trough is running north of its normal position and will stay there for the next 4-5 days. Break monsoon conditions are likely to extend for the next few days. Such weak monsoon favours light to moderate showers for South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and the coastal parts of Odisha on 01st/ 02ndSeptember. This may get organized further to percolate on surface as low pressure by 03rd / 04thSeptember. A trough is likely to extend all along the coast across Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu. This may not be a very sharp feature as such, but still good enough to trigger showers towards late evening and night.
Both the city observatories, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam, have far exceeded their monthly rainfall of August. Prolonged break and weak monsoon conditions have resulted good spread of showers during the 2nd and 3rd week of the month. Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam have recorded 222mm and 337mm rainfall so far against their monthly normal of 132.8mm and 141.4mm, respectively. Welcome showers aided by sea breeze, over the next few days will add the flavor of monsoon for the city and suburbs during remaining days of August and spill over to the first week of September.
