Rainy Days Ahead For Bengaluru, Rainfall May Exceed Normal In May

May 15, 2024 2:45 PM |

After having prolonged drought-like conditions, the tech city is catching up well with the pre-monsoon activity. The first half of this month has lashed the city and suburbs with decent showers. Some of these days, the showers were rather heavy in a few areas, including the international airport, resulting in water logging. More showers are coming up for the city during this week and spill over to the next, as well.

The city observatory has received 110mm of rainfall, so far, in the month, as against the monthly normal of 128.7mm. May rainfall is more than the monsoon month of June for Bengaluru. Conditions are favourable for the continuation of pre-monsoon activity, heavy at times, during the next 5 days. The city can expect over 100mm of rainfall in the next 10 days and therefore exceed the monthly normal by a sufficient margin. It is likely to cope with the deficiency left behind in April.

There is a north-south trough/ wind discontinuity, extending from parts of Maharashtra to down south, up to Kerala and the Comorin region, with minor east-west oscillations. Currently, this feature is marked from Marathwada to Comorin & Kerala, cutting across Karnataka, in the close vicinity of the capital city, Bengaluru. There is the likelihood of feeble bubbles as embedded cyclonic circulation in this trough. This will accentuate the weather activity, more likely on the 17th & 18th of May.

Moderate showers are likely over and around the city, till 20th May. Spread and intensity will be more on 17th & 18th May. As it normally happens, the active phase may slow down between the 21st and 24th of May. The day temperatures have eased out, after the commencement of pre-monsoon showers. The mercury has not breached the 34°C mark, during the last week. The maximum temperature was confined to less than 32°C, during the last 48 hours. The day temperature is likely to fall during the next 3-4 days and rise gradually, thereafter.
