An active western disturbance is arriving shortly over the northern mountains. Its support system as cyclonic circulation also moves in tandem across plains of North India.  Weather system travels east to cover entire stretch of Indo Gangetic plains and stretches across Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Along with hilly states of North India, the winter showers will have large swathe to sweep Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The peripherals of the weather system will also stretch across parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

Weather activity will commence on 21stJan over the northern plains covering Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and Delhi. On the subsequent 2 days, entire stretch of Indo Gangetic plains will witness rain and thundershower covering the capital cities of Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi and Kolkata.  The wet spell will start receding on 24thJan and yet splash light rain and drizzle, especially over the eastern parts.

Northern parts of the country have been reeling under severe cold for the last 4-5days. Also, entire Uttar Pradesh and  contiguous Bihar have been encroached with chilly conditions, accentuated further with dense fog  and sky obscured blocking sunshine.

Discomfort level is high on account of severely cold days, than reasonably nippy nights.  Uttar Pradesh displays worst scenario with many locations like Agra, Lucknow, Shahjahanpur, Hamirpur, Faizabad and Lakhimpur struggling to come up to double digit maximum. Mercury level at these locations have dropped 10-12°C below the normal values.

Wide spread rains across the northern and eastern parts of the country will suppress the fog and extreme dry cold. Persistent clouds and intermittent rains will continue to lower the day temperatures but ease out the cold wave conditions in some of the pockets.  Little respite can be expected from the harsh weather across most parts. However, excruciating cold  conditions will make a come back, in the wake of weather system stretching across Indo Gangetic plains.
