Rain in Northeast India

For most parts of India, including the plains and hilly reaches of Northeast India, rain was the defining feature of weather last week. But since Monday, weather seems to have taken a drier turn. But as weekend lurks over the country, Northeast India is expected to be visited by another spell of rain and thundery spell.

According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is seen 1.5kms above sea level over West Assam and adjoining areas. A trough has formed over the region starting from Arunachal Pradesh to South coastal Odisha across West Assam, Meghalaya and Bangladesh.

Due these multiple weather systems, Arunachal Pradesh witnessed few moderate spells especially towards the hills. Thunder-squall also happened over Assam, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh.

Rain with thundershowers is expected over parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura as well. But the caveat is that the rainfall will be light in nature which will be short lived.

In the span of 24 hours from 08:30am on Friday, Dibrugarh received 15.4 mm of rainfall, Golaghat 6.4 mm, Guwahati 2.6 mm, Jorhat 10.6 mm, North Lakhimpur 12.8 mm, Tezpur 7 mm.

At present, the maximum temperatures are hovering over hilly parts of the region is in higher 20°Cs, whereas plains are witnessing temperatures nearing lower 30°Cs. With light rain in offing, these numbers are likely to go down but the minimum temperatures are expected to go up due to cloud cover over the region.
