July 23, 2017 12:07 PM | Skymet Weather Team

After torrential rains over central and western parts of the country, Monsoon rains are all set to take a break. Two back to back low-pressure areas have given heavy to extremely heavy rains over these areas during the last two weeks.

Initially, a low-pressure area had formed over East Uttar Pradesh that had traveled towards Gujarat across Madhya Pradesh and concentrated into a well-marked low-pressure area. The systems had given very heavy rains over southeast Uttar Pradesh, most parts of Madhya Pradesh and then over Gujarat and South Rajasthan.

Another depression developed over West-central Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast. It also traveled in the west direction and reached Kutch region of Gujarat and South Rajasthan. Due to this, very heavy rains were recorded in Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, South Madhya Pradesh and now over Gujarat and South Rajasthan.

Also, due to active off shore trough along the West Coast, heavy rains continued over Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka. Mumbai has also recorded heavy to very showers during this time period.

At present, we expect good rains to continue over Gujarat and Southeast Rajasthan to continue for the next two days but with reduced intensity.

Further, as weather models are indicating that by July 25 or 26, Monsoon rains will reduce significantly over most parts of the country. Till then, only Kutch and adjoining south and East Rajasthan will receive good rains.

South Peninsula, including Maharashtra and West Coast, will also witness mainly dry weather conditions. Northeast India will too remain dry with occasional light rains. Most of the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will also be dry.  However, East Madhya Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh may get some good showers occasionally.

The intensity of rain may increase over North India but these rains will not be widespread and only, scattered showers are possible.

In other words, we can say that countrywide rainfall will reduce significantly for at least next 10 to 15 days. In fact, the month of August will start with weak Monsoon conditions over most parts of the country.
