Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been witnessing on and off rain and thundershowers since past one week. In fact, few southern districts of both the states have also recorded heavy spells.
During last 24 hours as well, light to moderate, with isolated heavy showers were observed over parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Punalur recorded a whopping 54 mm of rainfall, Kodaikanal 11 mm, Madurai 9 mm and Tiruchirappalli 5.4 mm of rains.
The reason for these rains and thundershowers can be attributed to the presence of a trough. This system is extending from Bihar to Interior Tamil Nadu across Chhattisgarh and Telangana.
As per Skymet Weather, scattered rain and thundershower activities will continue over many parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala for another two to three days. But Chennai and surrounding areas are dry for many days now.
These showers will be in patches, so we do not expect much change in temperatures. Both maximum and minimums will continue to settle above the normal levels. However, North Coastal Tamil Nadu will witness warm and humid weather conditions, leading to uneasiness and discomfort to the locals.
Before these rainy spells, both the states were reeling under warm and dry weather conditions due to the absence of any significant weather system over the area.
